FAQ

Turnaround time

What is the turnaround time for the analyses?

The turnaround time starts as soon as we have received your samples. If you have sent the samples by post, you receive a confirmation email for this. As soon as the results are known, your certificate with the results appears on your personal portal. You are notified of this by email.

2-3 working days

  • DNA sexing

3-5 working days

  • Disease tests (except ELISA PDD)

5-7 working days

  • Performance genes

10-14 working days

  • Kinship analysis
  • Colour mutation tests (not applicable to tests that have not yet been developed, or are still in development)
  • Species determination
  • ELISA PDD
How and when do I recieve my results?

As soon as your analysis is ready, you will receive an email. Your analysis report will appear at the same time on your personal portal, where you can download or share it. For a first submission, be sure to also check your inbox's spam folder!

Sampling

Who can take the sample?

You can take a sample yourself or have it taken by a vet. When a sample is taken by a vet, your certificate receives a stamp to prevent fraud.

Are you a vet? Then get in touch with us.

How do I take a sample from my bird?

Work hygienically when collecting the samples. You can request the following sampling materials from us via our contact form.

To avoid contamination, all samples are preferably collected in our zip bags.

  • Zip bags for feathers
  • Capillary blood tubes
  • Swabs
How do I submit samples?

Send us your complete request via our front desk *, by post * or via your vet.

For more information, see Request your test.

Request your sampling materials via our contact form.

* Address: NeorniLab, Beverlosesteenweg 129, 3583 Paal, Belgium

Request & payment

How do I submit a request?

Fill in the request form (available as a PDF or Excel file on our website) and send it together with your samples. You can also forward the completed form in advance via info@neornilab.be.A complete request consists of: the completed form + the samples.

How does payment work?

You will receive your invoice as soon as we have received your complete request.

  • At the counter: payment on the spot (cash or digital)
  • By post: invoice via email, payment by bank transfer
  • Through your veterinarian: payment is handled via your veterinarian

After payment, we begin the analysis. You will receive your certified results via email.

Results & analysis report

What does a NeorniLab analysis report look like?

After the analysis or analyses are completed, you receive a certificate with the result, the animal's details and, if desired, your personal details. This certificate always contains a unique certificate code. Using this code, you can later verify the authenticity of the certificate with us, based on the bird's identification (ring/chip). If the sampling was carried out by a vet, your certificate additionally bears a quality mark to prevent fraud. You can download your certificate on your personal portal.

How and when do I recieve my results?

As soon as your analysis is ready, you will receive an email. Your analysis report will appear at the same time on your personal portal, where you can download or share it. For a first submission, be sure to also check your inbox's spam folder!

How long do my results remain available on the portal?

Your results remain available for as long as your account is active. You can always download your reports and save them locally.

Personal portal (LOGIN)

How do I create a login?

Retest & under investigation

Retesting

In certain situations, a bird has to be tested again. On your personal portal this is shown as "Retest".

This process is fully automatic and your bird is retested as quickly as possible. A retest may be needed for various reasons:

  • Poor sample quality
  • Insufficient DNA available in the sample (e.g. with fallen moult feathers)
  • The test failed or was not successful
  • The results deviate from the standard

If insufficient good-quality DNA is available, we contact you to collect additional DNA from the bird in question.

To prevent this, we strongly advise you not to send fallen moult feathers and to always collect several feathers.

Under investigation

Due to unforeseen circumstances, the standard delivery time has been exceeded. As soon as the results are known, they appear on your personal portal.

Colour mutation tests

What exactly is tested in a colour mutation test?

At NeorniLab we use a DNA test to determine whether a bird carries a particular colour mutation (the so-called "split birds"). In doing so, we distinguish between mutation and colour or phenotype. In most cases, only one mutation is responsible for a colour. In certain cases, however, several mutations may be responsible for a colour, separately or in combination.

For example, in the Orange-winged Amazon (Amazona amazonica) and the Eclectus parrot (Eclectus roratus) there are two blue mutations, namely blue1 and blue2. In the Alexandrine Parakeet (Psittacula eupatria) too, we find an SL ino1 mutation and an SL ino2 mutation. At NeorniLab we therefore do not test for the phenotype, i.e. the colour, but for specific mutations. This is how we can guarantee a 100% certain result.

Good to know

  • The mutations we test for are always listed on our website. You can have a bird tested for a specific mutation, or by colour. In the latter case we test for all mutations.
  • If you are not sure about the precise mutation, you can on the request form simply note the colour, and we will then test for all mutations that can be detected for the colour in question.
  • When you have a possibly split bird tested at NeorniLab, you can always send along samples of a split or mutation bird from the same bloodline. That way you are sure it concerns the same colour mutation. In most cases this will be so.

My test is not listed

What if I can't find my analysis or test?

For a specific analysis or test that we don't yet offer, we'll develop a new test together with you. We first assess feasibility and then ask you to send in reference samples.
