Crop infections in pigeons

Trichomonas - yeasts and fungal infections

You can have your pigeons tested at NeorniLab for important crop infections such as trichomonas, yeasts and fungi. By avoiding these infections, or in some cases keeping them under control, you can prevent loss of condition and other problems during the racing season.

Trichomonas

Trichomonas is a single-celled parasite that in pigeons can lead to symptoms such as a coating in the throat, sinusitis and conjunctivitis. Older pigeons usually show mild symptoms such as loss of condition and throat infections, while young pigeons can experience more severe symptoms because they lack immunity to this parasite. This can present as coughing, blocked nostrils, digestive problems, lethargy, reduced appetite and even death.

Yeast and fungal infections

Yeast and fungal infections in the crop are usually caused by Candida yeasts, where active stages of the yeast may be present. Crop candidiasis can develop through, among other causes, crop stasis, contamination via feed or water, or excessive use of antibiotics.
