Circovirus in parrots
Circovirus in parrots, a beak and feather disease known as Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease (PBFD), is a viral condition that can affect parrots, parakeets and other bird species. The virus attacks the cells of the immune system and the bird's feather follicles. Symptoms can vary. Typically we see feather loss, deformed new feathers, skin lesions and beak abnormalities or deformities. In some cases, birds may also show signs of general weakness, such as weight loss, listlessness and reduced appetite. Because circovirus attacks the immune system, infected birds are also more susceptible to other infections.
Early diagnosis and supportive care are essential, as in some cases it is possible for the bird to overcome the infection with appropriate veterinary care and support. Birds that test positive but show no signs of disease should be retested after 2–3 months. This is necessary to identify and isolate long-term carriers within the population, since these birds may infect others.
Suitable samples
4–5 freshly plucked breast feathers
Cloacal swab
Blood (capillary/blood paper)
For the most accurate results, we prefer to receive a combination of the three samples listed above.
The crop swab and the cloacal swab can be collected using a single swab.

- Processing time: 3-5 business days from receipt of your sample.
